Underwater

November 20, 2021

In just a few short lines a recovering addict has written a remarkable description of both the agony and ecstasy of porn-viewing. His analogy is both incisive and unnerving–precisely because it rings so true. Read the following slowly, allowing the words and meaning to penetrate deeply into your psyche. By doing so you may gain a fuller understanding of the real nature of porn addiction.

Viewing porn is like what you experience when you submerse yourself in water.
When you are underwater you are alone. It is peaceful and quiet.
For a time you feel a sense of safety, being separated from the world and it’s problems, and your own
problems seem far, far away.
But if you stay underwater for too long
, your aching lungs tell you that you are desperate for air. You feel panicked and
and cry out for help, but there is no one to hear you because you’ve always preferred to swim alone.

Under the water we can’t breathe.
Under the water there is no one watching.
Under the water we are alone.
Under the water we die.
Then why do we jump in?
